Model Football Coach Gordon Powers Announces Retirement >> DETAILS
MEDIA RELEASE: Armuchee High School Football Coach, Coach Muhammad Abdellatif, has officially tendered his resignation as Head Football Coach to school officials. He has been the Head Football Coach since the 2014 season, replacing Preston Cash.

"I appreciate the opportunity I've had these past four years to grow as a coach & make an impact on these young students' lives," said Coach Abdellatif. "I wish them the best moving forward."

"Coach Abdellatif is a committed person to his profession & we thank him for his effort, hard work, and dedication these past four years," said AHS Principal Mr John Rhodarmer. "I'm appreciative of the character & leadership lessons he provided to our student athletes. I wish him the best in his future coaching endeavors."

"The resignation has been accepted & a search for a new Head Football Coach will begin immediately. We will work with the football program & assistant coaches to keep off-season programs going during the transition in preparation for the 2018 season," said AHS Athletic Director Mrs Telisa Chapman. "We appreciate everything he has done for the football program over the past four years."

Mr Rhodarmer & Mrs Chapman are working with the AHS Local School Governance Team (LSGT) to develop the process for finding new leadership for the football program.
Berry College's Valhalla Stadium served as an outstanding venue to host the first Pepperell High home football game on 9.1.17. Floyd Schools Superintendent Dr. John Jackson said Friday night was an exceptionally good evening thanks to the assistance of Sports Turf Company, Inc, Berry College, Berry's athletic department & the entire Pepperell community.

Tuesday morning, Sports Turf & FCS authorized personnel met to discuss the progress of the projects happening in Dragon Stadium at PHS. The decision was made that the football game versus Cedartown High School will be played on Lynn Hunnicutt Field at Dragon Stadium on 9.8.17 at 7:30P. FCS Director of Facilities, David Van Hook said those who attend the game may notice there are several incomplete sections of the track that are being cured for the latex coating & striping over the entire track. There are also some areas of the stadium that are not part of the field that are covered with wheat, straw & seed.

The game was held in Valhalla Stadium because of delayed construction on the PHS track & field due to weather-related setbacks that prevented the stadium from being gameday ready for the first home game of the 2017 football season. Though this was not the situation FCS & PHS had originally planned for, this was the first time that one of the four FCS high schools played a regular season game in a college football facility & the response was overwhelmingly positive.

"We want to continue this relationship we’re building with Berry & will certainly welcome a collaborative opportunity that would allow each of our high schools to play a home football game on Bob Williams Field for seasons to come,” said Jackson.

Cave Spring 5K Race to Benefit Cave Spring Elementary - The third annual Cave Spring Santa Sprint 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run took place Dec. 6 & began a new tradition for many runners looking to continue the celebration of the holidays with a tour through the heart of Cave Spring.

The town once again welcomed participants on a one-of-a-kind course that weaves its way through downtown Cave Spring, starting & finishing in the town square. All proceeds from the race will benefit the 1:1 technology initiative at Cave Spring Elementary School, with the goal of raising enough money to purchase a Google Chromebook for every student.

“The Santa Sprint has become part of the fabric of our town,” said race organizer & Floyd County Teacher of the Year Tabatha Tierce. “We're excited to give runners a fun reason to come out to Cave Spring. This year, we were hoping many of our students would participate in the fun run/health walk component.” Last year, over 100 people participated in the Santa Sprint & attendance continues to grow. The race welcomed participants of all ability levels from those who are beginners planning their first race to the more experienced runners. The Santa Sprint offers something for everyone as a certified qualifying event for the Peachtree Road Race in July. This is the third season for the football team, but the first in their new stadium, funded through gifts to Berry’s LifeReady Campaign. MEDIA RELEASE: Following a near-drowning incident that occurred Monday afternoon at the Northside Swim Center Pool, RFPRA officials express immense concern & will be investigating the incident further. "We are still gathering all the facts at this time,” said Interim Director Wendy Reid. “As a mother I can’t imagine the fear the child & the family felt. Our thoughts & prayers are with the child, the family & everyone who was present.” Program Coordinator Shawn Schumacher, who oversees the Northside Swim Center, said at the time of the incident three lifeguards were on deck surveying the pool when they saw the unresponsive child on the surface. The child was immediately moved to land where lifeguards administered CPR. Lifeguards were still performing life-saving techniques by the time authorities arrived. RNT has posted an available position for a new Sports Editor on a news employment website. Another local news source is reporting that RNT insiders have hinted that the current sports editor, Jim Alred, is leaving the paper only a 1.5 yrs after being "promoted", more like inheriting, the position after the previous editor left for more money and better working conditions. This is probably due to the fact that after the recent new owners voided all previous contracts and realized that Alred was making way too much money prior to the takeover or did not want to increase it to his satisfaction >> JOB POST

MEDIA RELEASE: Rome High School announces the hiring of John Reid as the seventh head football coach in school history.

Reid holds a career record of 119-41 (74%) and has a reputation for revitalizing football programs. He comes to Rome from Tift County High School in Tifton. While there from 2012-14, Reid oversaw the rebuilding of the football program from grades six through 12. Included in the project was updating equipment, re-organizing the booster club, building team facilities and improving the on-field product. Prior to Reid’s arrival, the Blue Devils had not enjoyed a winning season since 2008. Under Reid’s leadership, Tift County improved from 2-8 in 2012 to 5-5 in 2013 and 7-4 in 2014. Along the way, his freshman and junior varsity teams recorded winning seasons for the first time in 20 and 10 years respectively and defeated south Georgia powers Valdosta and Lowndes County for the first time in school history.

Before Tift County, Reid assembled a 60-15 record over six years at East Paulding. During his time there, Reid led the Raiders to three region runner-up titles and one region title. In playoff competition, East Paulding reached the quarterfinals three times and the semi-finals once. Against Rome High, Reid is 3-0 with a 27-3 first-round playoff victory at Barron Stadium in 2006 and region wins in 2008 and 2009.

At Alcoa High School in Alcoa, Tennessee, Reid’s 2004 and 2005 teams claimed state championships. The program continued winning after his departure. His sixth grade class of 2004 won state titles in every year of competition from 2004 to 2010.

Reid, a winner of multiple coaching awards from various organizations, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He and his wife Julie have been married 27 years. They have a son and two daughters: Colton, a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force; Kiersten, a basketball coach at Columbus State University; and Courtney, a junior at Kennesaw State University.

MEDIA RELEASE: RFPRA announced Monday that Richard Garland has officially resigned from his 25 year career and his nine-year post as Executive Director effective January 1, 2015. In his statement below, Richard explained that he has been presented with a great opportunity in the private sector and while the decision was not an easy one, he could not turn it down. Richard has been acting Executive Director for the last nine years, and in that time has guided the agency through the construction of North Floyd Park, Midway Park Renovations, Marine Armory Renovations, Barron Stadium Renovations, North Rome Swim Center Renovations, as well as 17 practice fields’ renovations. Richard’s accomplishments and contributions are too numerous to mention. A 1989 graduate of Shorter College Richard began working for RFPRA in January of 1990 and has served as a gym supervisor, special event coordinator, public information coordinator, sports coordinator, recreation services manager, parks superintendent and finally as the Executive Director.

Jerry Lee - Chairman, RFPRA Board

Mr. Lee:

It is with a very heavy heart that I give you notice of my resignation on January 1, 2015. This has been my home for the past 25 years, and it has been no easy task making the decision to move on. However, I feel it is time for me to do so. I would like to express extreme gratitude to all of those who have influenced or directed my time here. This was my first place of employment out of college and I have had many wonderful experiences during my tenure here than I would ever be able to iterate in this letter but, they will all go with me as I begin a new chapter of my professional career in the private sector. It has been an honor to represent you and the Board as Director of this agency over the past nine years. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with some of Rome’s finest citizens serving as Board Members. I will not soon forget the lessons that were taught to me by this body. I wish you the very best of luck in the continued negotiations with the City and County and the future of Parks and Recreation in this community. I have poured my life into this agency to see it become the very best it can be. I leave confident that great strides were made under my leadership to reach that vision. I leave a very dedicated group of exceptional people that have made my work a pleasure. They never get the credit or the accolades they have earned for providing this community with outstanding programming, parks and facilities. They will be vital to the agency as the Board moves forward. Again, thank-you for all that you have done to support me. While I may be leaving, a huge part of my heart will always be right here. If I may be of any assistance in this future time of transition, please do not hesitate to call on me. Very kind regards your humble servant

- Richard Garland
