Emergency Management Director Scotty Hancock and the National Weather Service completed an aerial damage assessment of the affected areas in Rome and Floyd County.
According to the assessment there was an EF-2 tornado, with winds around 120 Mph that touched down in Floyd County at approximately 5:00 pm yesterday afternoon. The tornado’s path began along Smith Road in the unincorporated area of Floyd County and proceeded into the West Rome area near Wilkerson Road; the path continued through Summerville Park and exited in North Eastern Floyd County around Buttram Road. The damage was mainly focused within the city limits of Rome. There were 3 minor injuries reported as a result of the tornado. A Red Cross approved shelter was opened at West Minister Presbyterian Church at approximately 8:30 pm last night. One family visited the shelter and no one stayed overnight. Georgia power reported that 35 poles were broken and 70 Spans of wire had to be replaced. An initial damage assessment on the number of damaged structure was complete with the assistance of the Rome/Floyd CERT, Floyd County Sheriff’s Posse and the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency. The assessment were as follows, 101 homes with minor damage, 29 homes with major damage, 23 homes destroyed for a total of 153 homes with damage, 20 businesses suffered damage 14 of those minor and 6 destroyed.
Scotty Hancock, Director of Floyd County’s Emergency Management Agency, advised residents to please stay clear of the affected areas, the utility workers cannot complete their work with the constant flow of traffic in those areas. He also advise to be aware of the potential for scams, it is unfortunate but very likely during these difficult times that people with try to take advantage of others.
