Although veterans may have recorded their DD-214 in their home town or in a county or another state far away from Floyd County, you are encouraged to record them here as well. If your DD-214 has been recorded somewhere else and you are now living in Floyd County, simply bring your DD-214 to the Clerk of Superior Court's Office located at 3 Government Plaza, Suite 101 and we will record it in our records. If there comes a time you need a certified copy, then we will be able to provide one for you and it will not be necessary to send to another county or state to obtain your record. This is a free service to all our veterans that my office is delighted to offer. You paid it forward for all of us. Thank you.” | BACK TO TOP | The closing was required by Norfolk Southern to approve the aerial crossing on the West Rome Bypass over the railroad. According to Michael Skeen, Director of Public Works for Floyd County, "Public Works crews are currently installing cul-de-sacs on each side of the track to help traffic in the area. Crews will also be installing advance notice signs this week to help spread the word". People normally travelling on this section of Oreburg should plan to use nearby Turner Bend Rd or the bypass as alternate routes. PROJECT DETAILS > Floyd County Public Works has been working for a couple of months on a project south of Rome that re-aligns the connection of Blacks Bluff Rd & the bypass just south of the Lock & Dam. Daily road closures will continue for a few more days as we remove the old asphalt near the bypass to tie in with the new road bed. We have delays due to the thickness of the existing asphalt. Typically, one would expect 4, maybe 6 or 8” of asphalt to remove. Unfortunately, for a couple of hundred feet, the asphalt is 1' to an amazing 3 1/2' thick! We don't have equipment to remove that & had to rent an excavator with a hammer to help bust it up. The hammer is the orange machine, operated by Aaron Johnson in the 2nd picture. Randy Martin is running the excavator on the right loading the trucks to haul away the old roadbed. The first picture shows Public Works employee Eddie Watters working in material to level the road bed so we can open the road when we are not working. This project is funded by the state as an additional Local Maintenance Improvement Grant project issued in 2016. We hope to get the tie-in complete next week & will pave the road when the asphalt plant opens in the few weeks. PROJECT DETAILS > Floyd County Public Works has an active project that will take a few weeks to complete on Park Rd near our work camp just south of Rome. GDOT is funding the material cost through a Local Maintenance Improvement Grant program. We closed the road this week while working as a safety measure & will periodically do the same in the future when needed. This part of the project is to install an underground storm water system that will allow us to have a large shoulder where previously we had a deep 5'-6' drop-off with no shoulder. This week we installed a temporary driveway, replaced the primary driveway & installed approximately 200' of pipe in the ditch. The first picture is looking downhill & shows the ditch issue & the driveways. The 2nd picture is a better view of the driveways & gives you an idea of our next effort which will focus on building boxes to connect the pipe & provide access for storm water runoff & maintenance. We will continue for about 1,000' total & then resurface the road later this year to complete this project. “We understand this project may cause the public some inconvenience, but upon completion, it will improve the flow of traffic on the highway, make it safer, and help the public get where they need to go in Floyd and Polk counties,” said Dewayne Comer, district engineer at the DOT office in Cartersville. This construction project is scheduled to be completed by the end of February 2017, at a construction cost of $2,136,901. Georgia DOT awarded a contract to C.W. Matthews Contracting Company, Inc. of Marietta, Georgia, for the $2 million construction project back in April and issued a notice to proceed early May 2016. Contractors will be open to bid starting Sept. 1 at 3P. The winning bid will be awarded no later than Sept. 15, and the chosen contractor will have no more than 90 days to complete renovations. Restoration work includes refurbishing the original clockworks on display, replacing rotted wood panels, painting wood surfaces such as the clock face, installing new flooring and updating the landscape. The Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau has helped raise roughly $15,000 of the $50,000 goal in conjunction with the Rome Area History Foundation. One of the most popular fundraising initiatives has been the selling of engraved bricks that will be inlaid on the grounds at the Clocktower. "The Convention and Visitors Bureau has been a huge help to the city" said Rome City Clerk, Joe Smith. "Once we select a contractor, it will be in the contractor’s best interests to begin work right away to get the most out of their allotted time." The CVB has a couple more fundraisers planned to benefit the restoration of the Clocktower before construction begins. The Last Stop Gift Shop will host an online art auction from Sept. 8 – 9 on the Last Stop Gift Shop Facebook page. The auction includes framed photographs and artwork of the Clocktower. There are also limited edition ink prints of the Clocktower available in-store at the Last Stop Gift Shop for $10 each. The gift shop is also selling the last of the memorial Clocktower bricks. Engravable bricks are available for $250 and will be installed on the grounds of the historic Clocktower. The bricks are the perfect way to show support, mark a special date, or to remember those who share in the community’s love for the iconic landmark. All proceeds from the art auction and brick sales will benefit the restoration of the Clocktower. For more information on the Clocktower renovations, contact Joe Smith at Rome City Clerk’s Office at 706.236.4460.
