9.19.07 UPDATE View video from Wednesday on the Feature Video page. The
placement of the first bridge beam was delayed Wednesday because of low water causing the barge to hit the bottom of the
river. They will try again tomorrow when the dam upstream releases it's regular water flow that should raise the river's
water level enough to get the beam placement back on track. There will be no beam delivery on Thursday because of this delay.
The expected delivery of the first of six 80-ton beams for the Pedestrian Bridge project was delivered a little behind
schedule Tuesday because of an apparent malfunction with the crane that was to be delivered with the beam. After the repair
of the crane, the beam began its journey from Atlanta to Rome.
A special permit was issued by the Georgia Department of Transportation for the transporting of the beams to Rome. GDOT signs
will be placed to warn motorists of the “super load,” which will be about three times the size of a typical tractor-trailer.
Two more beams are scheduled for delivery Wednesday, another two Thursday and the last shipment will come Friday. The beams
will form the foundation for the bridge decking.
When complete, the $2.5 million pedestrian bridge will link downtown Rome with the West Third Street district across the
river.
